Sag Harbor Parks

Sag Harbor is a waterfront village with real depth. It’s historic without feeling frozen in time. Active year-round. Unpretentious in a market that often isn’t.

People come for different reasons: the boating culture, the elegant 19th-century homes, the working marinas lined with sailboats and yachts, the quiet coves perfect for kayaking or paddleboarding. Others are drawn by the arts scene, the restaurants, the walkable village streets. What keeps them here is the sense that it functions — in every season.

Much of that daily life happens outdoors.

A protected village beach. Athletic fields for softball, tennis, and pickleball. Playgrounds. A beautiful community green from which to watch the boats and have community events. And a wide bay shoreline where watching the sunset is routine, not an event.

Sag Harbor’s parks are part of the village’s infrastructure — social, recreational, and cultural — and they fully enhance the living experience.

John Steinbeck Waterfront Park

41.002578, 72.296574, Sag Harbor

John Steinbeck Waterfront Park, occupying 1.25 acres along the shores of Sag Harbor, is a tribute to the famed author John Steinbeck, who made this village his home. This waterfront park is a peaceful oasis and a scenic gateway to the Village's Main Street.

The park is a focal point for community life and accessibility. It has been integrated with the newly renovated Long Wharf, featuring an ecologically sustainable boardwalk. This development is part of a larger effort to enhance accessibility throughout the area, allowing full ADA access from The Wharf under the Lance Corporal Jordan C. Haerter Veterans Memorial Bridge. This interconnected feature forms a central hub in the heart of downtown Sag Harbor, linking various elements of the village in a seamless and accessible manner.

Visitors to the park can enjoy the tranquil surroundings where the reflections of sunlight on the water complement the serene atmosphere, which is ideal for relaxation or a reflective stroll. The park's strategic location and connection to significant community landmarks make it a natural gathering place, offering a blend of leisure and educational opportunities within a setting that honors a notable literary figure and the community's maritime heritage.

This blend of accessibility, historical significance, and natural beauty makes John Steinbeck Waterfront Park a cherished spot in Sag Harbor. It enhances the village's appeal as a destination for those who appreciate its cultural history and commitment to inclusivity and environmental sustainability.

Foster Memorial Beach (aka Long Beach)

3809 Noyack Rd, Sag Harbor

Foster Memorial Beach, more affectionately known as Long Beach, is a cherished local spot with a rich history and various amenities catering to beachgoers. The beach is named after Clifford Foster, a Sagaponack farmer who originally owned the land and bequeathed it to the town upon his passing, allowing generations to enjoy the scenic views and sandy shores.

Foster Memorial Beach is on a narrow strip of land connecting Noyac to North Haven. Its unique geographical setting enhances its appeal. During the active season, the beach features lifeguard services daily from 10 AM to 5 PM, ensuring a safe environment for swimming and water activities.

One of Foster Memorial Beach's highlights is the opportunity for beach barbecues, making it a popular spot for family gatherings and social events. Additionally, the beach provides drive-on access; however, it requires a Southampton Town Trustees 4×4 beach driving permit, and there is a strict speed limit of 10 miles per hour to ensure the safety of all visitors. It's important to note that ATVs are not allowed on the beach.

Pet owners will find Foster Memorial Beach accommodating, as leashed pets are permitted on marked dog walk routes, parking areas, and paved footpaths. However, to preserve the cleanliness and safety of the recreational areas, pets are not allowed on the beach, in picnic areas, or in other grassy regions of the park.

Lovelady Park

Named for Lovelady Powell, the actress known for her role on the cult favorite TV drama Dark Shadows, the property once served as a private gathering place during a particularly fertile cultural moment in Sag Harbor. Musicians including Crosby, Stills & Nash, Joni Mitchell, and John Sebastian of The Lovin' Spoonful spent time there — writing, collaborating, and contributing to the creative undercurrent that defined the era.

Today, the park is understated: open lawn, seating areas, lovely walking paths, and beautifully landscaped green space are woven into the village fabric. It’s the kind of place you walk through without ceremony. Sit without occasion. Let a conversation stretch longer than intended.

In a village long associated with maritime history and the arts, Lovelady Park is a reminder that Sag Harbor’s cultural life was — and still is — intimate, residential, and embedded in everyday spaces.

Mashashimuet Park

Mashashimuet Park (affectionately known as “Mash Park”) is Sag Harbor’s recreational backbone — and one of the reasons the village feels like a real community rather than a seasonal resort.

Spanning roughly 40 acres at the edge of the historic district, the park includes tennis courts, basketball courts, baseball and soccer fields, a playground, and open green space used year-round. In recent years, pickleball has joined the mix — and if you’ve been there on a summer morning, you know those courts are rarely empty.

This is where Sag Harbor Little League plays. Where high school games unfold under the lights. Where parents linger after practice, and neighbors run into each other without planning to.

For full-time residents especially, proximity to Mashashimuet changes routine. Kids can bike to practice. Walks include a loop through the fields. Community events happen here. It’s practical infrastructure — and in a village this compact, practical matters.
